Where they're at

I’m already building something and want to take it further

Something they're proud of

I'm a pediatric critical care nurse at Children's of Alabama finishing my doctorate at UAB, and I've been teaching myself to build apps on the side. I now have three published iOS apps and an LLC (Martin Apps LLC). The one I'm most proud of is Burn Wizard: an app that teaches medical students how to assess burn injuries. Users tap on an interactive body map to mark burns, and it generates a full treatment plan: IV fluid calculations, burn center referral criteria, and dressing recommendations. It has a daily challenge mode (like Wordle but for burn care), supports English and Spanish, and has over 1,500 automated tests. It's live on the App Store now. I also built Wilderness Survival Companion, an offline survival guide sourced entirely from the U.S. Army Survival Manual, SAS guides, and CDC/NOAA data. It includes weather calculators, plant identification, knot-tying diagrams, and a solo hiker safety timer. Also on the App Store. The project I'm most excited about going forward is BoardBound: an AI-powered board exam prep app for nurse practitioner students. It pairs a question bank with a conversational AI tutor that explains the clinical reasoning behind each answer. I've formed the LLC, set up pricing, and I'm building toward an iOS launch. Long-term, I want to sell directly to nursing schools. On the research side, I'm leading a project at Children's of Alabama using nnU-Net (a neural network architecture for medical image segmentation) to automatically measure optic pathway glioma tumors in children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 from MRI scans. I recruited the Director of Pediatric Neuro-oncology at Children's and the Associate Professor of Neuroradiology at UAB onto the project team. Paper under review, $10K grant application in. All of this built from Birmingham. I know that I may be slightly late to the application process, but I am confident that I could be a valuable addition to this program and learn a great deal as well!
